Electric Guitar
Similar to all the other guitar types, the electric guitar is also a polyphonic instrument belonging to the string family of lutes.
Its development began in the beginnings of the 1930’s by the Rickenbacker company, and was later continued by Fender, Gibson and other smaller companies.
Originally it was used by the Big Band jazz musicians. It is played with a pick, although periodically blues guitarists have been noted to play the electric guitar using their fingers. Its parts, which consist of the body (the wide part of the guitar) and the neck, are constructed from wood. The electric guitar contains 6 strings tuned to C G E B F C.
More recent guitar designs have sported 2 necks with 6 and 12 strings respectively. The electric guitar is used in various music genres such as blues, jazz , pop, rock, heavy metal, etc. The first well-known electric guitar players include Álvino Rey,George Barnes, Eddie Durham and Charlie Christian. Among the most famous players of this type of guitar are Django Reinhardt, B.B.King, Wes Montgomery, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Ritchie Blackmore, Gary Moore, Rory Gallagher, John Mc Laughlin, Al Di Meola, Eddie Van Halen, Randy Rhoads, Yngwie Malmsteen, Steve Vai, John Petrucci , Joe Satriani, et.al.
Studies in electric guitar are divided into 4 learning cycles, covering theory, harmony, song accompaniment and improvisation.
