Manos Charalabopoulos was born in 1991 in Athens and started learning the piano at the age of four with his father, Theodoros Charalabopoulos. He remained in his father’s class for 12 years, until he gave his first public solo recital at the American College of Greece in 2007, a year during which he studied with Dimitri Toufexis also.
Since then he has appeared on the concert stage many a time across the UK and Greece, performing at venues such as the Bridgewater Hall (Manchester), St. Martin-in-the-Fields (London), Conway Hall (London), the Historical Hellenic Parliament (Nafplion), the American College of Greece etc., and last February he made his concerto debut in a concert with the ERT National Symphony Orchestra, which was broadcast live on the 3rd (Radio) Programme across Greece. Over the past few years he has won major prizes in piano competitions at a national and international level, such as 1st and overall prize in the 'Panhellenic Piano Competition “Filon”', 2nd prize in the 'International Piano Competition “Evangelia Tjiarri”', first and overall prize in the EPTA UK 2009 Piano Competition etc.
Between 2007 and 2009 he was a student of 'Chetham's School of Music' in Manchester (UK), where he studied piano with Murray McLachlan and harpsichord with Sharon Gould. As a pianist, in those two years he took part in several artistic events such as a Debussy Prelude cycle (October 2007), 555 Scarlatti Sonatas (November 2007), a Messiaen cycle (May 2008) and a Bernstein Festival (October 2008). In July 2008 he performed with Chetham's Symphony Orchestra in the Bridgewater Hall (Stravinsky's Symphony in Three Movements) and March 2009 he appeared again in the same venue performing Bernstein's Symphonic Dances from West Side Story in an arrangement for two pianos and percussion.
During those two years he also developed an interest in the harpsichord and in particular the music of the 17th and early 18th century having interpreted pieces ranging from Rameau to Bach in a series of period-dedicated concerts. As a chamber musician again he has gained much from the wide variety of ensembles that he has been a part of (piano trio, piano sextet, two pianos, baroque trios, lieder accompaniment, continuo). As a member of Chetham's Chamber Choir he has performed in the 2009 Proms in the Royal Albert Hall (London) in Haydn's The Creation.
In June 2009 he was awarded the Recital Diploma (piano) of ‘Orfeion School of Music’ in Athens, following a recital at the American College of Greece. Validated by ‘Orfeion’, he also holds the Theoretical ‘Ptychion Armonias’ for which he studied under Konstantinos Telakis.
Currently, Manos is furthering his academic musical education at the University of Oxford and continues to study piano with Murray McLachlan. Future engagements include chamber and solo recitals in Oxford (Holywell Music Room) and Bath (Pump Rooms).
