Cornet (horn)
The cornet belongs to the brass wind instrument family and is one of the oldest brass instruments.
In ancient times the cornet was made out of the horns of animals, which betrays its name.
Until the 1700s the cornet and the brass winds in general could only play the harmonics of the tone to which they were tuned. This was the reason why the cornet delayed being introduced into the orchestra, due to its weakness in producing chromatic notes.
In 1815 Stolzel invented the three-piston valve system, which allowed the instrument to produce the full chromatic scale.
The study of the cornet is recognised by the State and affords its students a Certificate and Diploma. Duration of tuition is 8 years for the Certificate and the Diploma or 10 years for the Diploma, if a Certificate is previously obtained.
The classes, specifically, are as follows:

- Lower (2 years)
- Intermediate (2 years)
- Advanced (3 years for the Certificate and 4 for the Diploma)
The student may directly obtain a Diploma in the fourth year of the Advanced Class or opt for the Certificate first in the third year of the Advanced class and a Diploma two years later.
